Tourists in Calakmul (Campeche) denounce unfair competition fostered by the 4T

Since 2024, hotels in Calakmul have been removed from Booking.com, a leading travel platform that allows users to search, compare, and book accommodations from abroad. This has had serious consequences for local businesses, whose investments are on the verge of collapse because they have been excluded from the market.

The root of this serious problem facing local tourism businesses is the fact that, currently, only the Hotel Mundo Maya, built within the Calakmul Archaeological Zone during Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration, appears on the Booking.com platform.

The problem is severe, as 70 percent of those who purchased local hotel services in Calakmul were European visitors, a market now monopolized by the Hotel Mundo Maya.

This situation was brought before the State Congress by Enrique Rodriguez Córdova, president of the Calakmul Tourism Committee, who called for an end to unfair competition and reported that the State Tourism Secretariat has also been informed of the situation. Hotel owners in Calakmul are requesting the support of state representatives to urge the relevant authorities to ensure a level playing field, as their businesses have been negatively impacted since the arrival of the Hotel Maya.
