According to data from the Baja California Sur Health Secretariat (SSABCS), 734 cases of dengue fever have been registered so far this 2025-2026 season across the state’s five municipalities.
The head of SSABCS, Ana Luisa Castro Guluarte, specified that 53 patients have been reported in 2026 alone, with La Paz and Los Cabos having the highest incidence this season.
“There are 53 reported cases so far this year. We can’t say it’s a decrease, although compared to last year we have a lower number of cases,” she said.
She also detailed that four deaths have been reported this year, all in the municipality of La Paz, according to the epidemiological report.
It’s worth noting that compared to 2024, a year in which 2,618 cases of this virus and five deaths were recorded, this season shows a 71.96 percent decrease in the incidence of cases.
However, the Secretary of Health emphasized that when it comes to dengue, vigilance cannot be relaxed in Baja California Sur, as the conditions in the region require institutions to remain alert and continue working on campaigns such as the “Clean Yard” initiative.
In this regard, in 2024, more than 90 percent of the cases were concentrated in the municipality of Los Cabos.
Therefore, this season they activated the Wolbachia strategy, which involves releasing mosquitoes to promote biological control of dengue and other diseases such as Zika and chikungunya.
“We continue working on the Wolbachia strategy in Los Cabos, and we are about to receive results on how we are implementing this mosquito control program in this area. We must not let our guard down regarding dengue; keeping your yard clean is the best strategy for dengue,” he reiterated.
For his part, the Deputy Director of Epidemiology for the Baja California Sur State Health Services (SSABCS), Alfredo Ojeda Garmendia, emphasized that dengue is an endemic and multifactorial disease, related to urban populations and population density.
He explained that, in the case of Los Cabos, having the largest population and highest population density predisposes it to an increase in cases.
