The stage of the Socorro Astol Theater will become a meeting point between opera and musical theater. This Wednesday, March 18, the Sinaloa Opera Workshop (TAOS), under the auspices of the Sinaloa Institute of Culture, will present the “Broadway and More Gala,” a program that introduces the public to some of the most representative works of the international repertoire.
The performance, with free admission and scheduled for 5:00 p.m., will bring together aspiring performers in a theatrical exercise where different musical traditions converge: from classic musicals to pieces that have transcended into film.
In an interview, tenor and artistic director José Manuel Chú noted that the concert was conceived as a journey through recognizable works, capable of connecting with diverse audiences through vocal performance.
The gala will feature his artistic and vocal direction, as well as accompaniment by Zlatina Valkova and Salomón Gil on piano, in a format that prioritizes the voice and interpretation.
The program includes pieces such as “If I Were a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof, “Arabian Nights” from Aladdin, “The Sound of Music,” “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story, “Memory” from Cats, and “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha.
It also features works such as “Summertime” from the opera Porgy and Bess, “City of Stars” from La La Land, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from Grease, “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar, among others.
The performances will be given by Cyan Rangel, Evelyn Tovón, Cecilia Ruiz Antelo, Daniel Rodríguez, Belén Elisama, Alejandro Pacheco, Priscila, Blanca Nayleth Espinoza, and Ángela Patricia Rodríguez, who will bring this repertoire to life.
José Manuel Chú boasts an international career as a tenor, with performances on stages across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, as well as participation in competitions and operatic productions.
More than just a concert, the “Broadway and More Gala” is conceived as an exercise in cultural education and outreach, where the public can explore diverse musical languages through live performance.
The event takes place this Wednesday, March 18, at the Teatro Socorro Astol, an open invitation to explore the world of musical theater, right here in Culiacán.
