State government acknowledges “hidden mafias” in the SMT

Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier acknowledged the presence of irregular groups within the Puebla Ministry of Mobility and Transportation (SMT), which is facing internal resistance linked to practices that have persisted for years.

During his press conference, he stated that the administrative structure is experiencing operational difficulties and compared it to a “rheumatic elephant,” referring to the obstacles he faces in implementing measures in the transportation sector.

He indicated that the criticism and resistance faced by the head of the agency, Silvia Tanús Osorio, are related to actions undertaken to regulate the concession system and review public transportation operations.

In this context, he commented that practices such as the operation of unauthorized vehicles, the use of counterfeit license plates, and the operation of taxis without permits have been detected in the sector.

Armenta Mier affirmed that, should irregularities be detected within the administration, the officials involved will be dismissed.

He also urged the public to avoid using unregistered vehicles and noted that the vehicle inspection process will reveal the number of permits and the operating conditions of transportation providers in the state.

This crisis dates back to previous administrations, such as those of Luis Miguel Barbosa and Sergio Salomón Céspedes, where an attempt was made to implement a modernization process that included fare increases in exchange for the installation of security cameras and panic buttons.

Monday’s statement confirms that there will be an “administrative purge” in the coming months, as he revealed that an internal investigation has been launched to identify those who repeatedly engage in these practices.
