The Chapitos ‘mourn’ the death of ‘Mencho’: Without him, they would lose the war in Sinaloa

This is probably the most significant event in the criminal underworld. Nemesio Oseguera, “El Mencho,” founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed on February 22.

His death, during a confrontation with the military, opens a period of uncertainty, especially for the Los Chapitos faction, with whom he had formed an alliance in 2025.

The sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who in recent years lost important operatives, regained power thanks to their ties with the CJNG, which provided them with weapons and tactical equipment.

According to information from the US, “El Mencho” provided protection to Los Menores in exchange for trafficking cocaine through his routes.

But the situation could change after the death of the criminal leader. According to Eduardo Guerrero, a columnist for El Financiero, this killing will reorganize the criminal landscape of Mexico, as well as trigger several wars with local criminal groups.

In December, “El Mencho” met in Nayarit with a high-ranking official of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, leader of Los Chapitos.

During this meeting, it was agreed that the CJNG would provide weapons, money, and fighters in exchange for access to the smuggling routes and border tunnels controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel.

Ayelen Iglesias, a student from the Colegio de Bachilleres who disappeared in Cuernavaca, has been found alive.

Before this agreement, the CJNG paid high fees to use these tunnels. As a result, Los Chapitos maintained control of the fentanyl trade, while “El Mencho” retained control of the cocaine and methamphetamine trafficking.

Sin el Mencho, Los Chapitos podrían estar en desventaja en la guerra por el Cártel de Sinaloa
