The global report indicates that Mexico has dropped out of the top 10 happiest countries, falling from 10th to 12th place in the 2026 World Happiness Report. According to specialists from ITAM, UNAM, and Ibero, this adjustment does not reflect a significant decline in well-being, but rather changes in its relative position compared to other nations. This information is based on the international report and statements made by academics at a conference.
According to La Jornada, the experts noted that the difference in score is minimal, with a variation of only seven thousandths of a point compared to the previous year, which maintains virtually the same average level. This suggests that the overall level of happiness in Mexico remains stable.
The global happiness ranking is published every March 20, coinciding with the International Day of Happiness promoted by the UN.
This indicator evaluates:
Perception of personal well-being
Life satisfaction
Social and economic factors
The measurement is based on the Gallup World Poll, conducted in 147 countries.
The study uses the Cantril Ladder, a tool that measures life perception on a scale of 0 to 10.
In this exercise:
Mexico scored 6.97 points
Finland reached 7.76, the highest level
Afghanistan registered 1.45, the lowest
These data reflect significant differences in quality of life between countries.
In the most recent edition, Finland remains the country with the highest well-being for the ninth consecutive year.
It is followed by:
Iceland
Denmark
Costa Rica, which ranks fourth
The latter stands out as the first Latin American country to achieve high positions in the world happiness ranking.
Specialists highlighted that emotional well-being depends on multiple variables, including the social environment and access to services.
They also emphasized that the digital context plays a significant role in the perception of happiness, especially across different age groups and socioeconomic levels.
This year’s analysis included the effect of social media on mental health.
Experts identified that:
Platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook are associated with greater well-being.
Networks with algorithmic content, such as Instagram, TikTok, and X, are linked to distress when used intensively.
This suggests that not all platforms have the same impact on emotional experience.
The study indicates that intensive use of digital platforms can affect certain groups more.
Specifically:
Adolescents are at greater risk of anxiety and depression.
Young women show greater vulnerability.
Men under 25 also experience negative effects.
These patterns demonstrate differences in how the impact of digital media on mental health is experienced.
Relationship between Social Media Use and Well-being
Experts clarified that the relationship between social media use and emotional state is not entirely direct.
It is possible that:
People with pre-existing distress may use these platforms more frequently.
This keeps the analysis of the relationship between technology and well-being open.
The fact that Mexico has dropped out of the top 10 for happiness does not imply a significant decline in quality of life, but rather an adjustment compared to other countries.
The result reflects a scenario where well-being remains stable, but international competition in this indicator continues to evolve.
