71-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DIES FROM BOAR WORM BLOWN, AND CONGRESSWOMAN BLAMES MORENA FOR REFUSING TO CREATE A PREVENTION COMMISSION IN YUCATÁN

Chaty Polanco, a local representative for the National Action Party (PAN) in Yucatán, announced the death of a 71-year-old woman from screwworm infestation, blaming the Morena-led state government for refusing to create a commission to monitor and prevent the spread of the parasite.

The website Mi Punto de Vista (My Point of View) shared the legislator’s statement: “Today I am saddened by what happened in Yucatán. A person died from myiasis associated with screwworm infestation. And beyond any official statement, there is a family experiencing a loss. My solidarity and respect go out to them. Because behind every case there is a life, and that can never be minimized. But there is also something we cannot ignore: in healthcare, acting late is not an option. Problems don’t begin when they become public; they begin much earlier. And that is where this Morena government has failed: in prevention, in monitoring, and in the ability to act in a timely manner.”

Today, he continues, they tell us it’s an isolated case and that there’s no risk. And I truly hope so. But that doesn’t erase the most important question: what was done before to prevent this from happening? Because, in addition, when we in the PAN party in Yucatán proposed creating the Special Commission to Monitor the Cattle Screwworm Zoosanitary Crisis, the Morena majority decided not to support it. There was also an opportunity to act sooner… and they didn’t.

In Yucatán, we’ve already seen this: when you don’t act in time, the people pay the price. And that’s infuriating, because taking care of people isn’t about coming out and explaining things later; it’s about having done what was necessary beforehand. Today, more than ever, we need a government that prevents, coordinates, and responds promptly. Because taking care of people isn’t just rhetoric. It’s a responsibility. And in health, that responsibility doesn’t allow for delays. That concludes this post.
