Chanting “The land is not for sale,” just over 500 people from Mayan communities in Yucatán marched through downtown Mérida to highlight their struggle to defend their territory, which they are being dispossessed of by real estate developers.
The protest included residents of Dzitnup, Ixil, Kinchil, Molas, Santa María Chi, and Sisal. They were joined by people from Caucel, Uayalceh de Peón, and Tixkokob. The common denominator is the devastation of the environment, the tropical dry forest, and the mangroves, all under the guise of progress.
“All the land belongs to people who aren’t from our communities, and this threatens our way of life, customs, and language. We are fed up with deception and lies, with politicians who promise us supposed development, jobs, and prosperity, and all we’ve seen is blatant plunder,” one protester declared.
The protesters from the Mayan communities demanded that state authorities review the projects, as well as the permits and authorizations for the environmental impact assessments. It should be noted that several of the projects have been halted through legal injunctions and complaints, which the companies are ignoring and continuing to operate.
