Business leaders in Los Cabos reject the notion that the airport should be a point of pressure for families of the disappeared.

The closure of access roads to and from Los Cabos International Airport for more than nine hours, following the disappearance of young Juan Luis, generated mixed reactions among the business sector. While some called for empathy with the affected family, others warned about the fragility of the destination’s main tourism infrastructure.

The president of the Los Cabos Coordinating Council (CCC), Julio Castillo Gómez, described the situation as “lamentable and complex,” noting that it represents a scenario where the pain of a family converges with the collective effects that impact the entire population.

“As a father, I understand the terror, fear, and pain one feels when a child’s life is at risk. We must have empathy and put ourselves in their shoes.”

However, he indicated that these types of demonstrations also reflect a recurring problem in the destination, where various sectors have resorted to blocking the airport as a pressure tactic.

The business leader stated that to prevent these types of cases from escalating to the point of blocking federal highways, law enforcement authorities must deliver results for the families.

“We need to work on both prevention and enforcement of the law so that people don’t reach that point of desperation and have to demand what they consider just. Parents need to be very careful about where their children are.”

The business representative warned that the Los Cabos International Airport has become a vulnerable point for social conflicts, which jeopardizes the region’s economic stability.

“The first and most important point is that, ultimately, we must be empathetic to what happened to the family, but we also cannot ignore the vulnerability of the federal facility as an airport. It cannot be held hostage by any kind of situation or grievance, justified or unjustified, in the city; this cannot continue. It puts so many things at risk.”

He reiterated that these types of blockades occur in a context where security in Mexico faces constant scrutiny, which increases the negative impact on the perception of the tourist destination.

The president of the CCC also emphasized the importance of clarifying the facts surrounding the young man’s disappearance, including the reports of an alleged arrest.

“The authorities are obligated to confirm all versions. We must investigate who made the arrest, who has the authority to do so, but also verify whether what is being said about the young men is true or not.”
