The Secretary of Government of Durango, Héctor Vela, asked that Sinaloa not be stigmatized despite the violence, although he recommended that those traveling during Holy Week do so with caution.
Amid concerns about security in Sinaloa, Durango authorities issued a statement regarding tourist travel during the upcoming holiday period, especially to destinations like Mazatlán.
Héctor Vela pointed out that the security situation in the neighboring state should not be generalized, emphasizing that there are citizens who work in tourism. The official warned about the impact of negative statements and asked that people avoid making remarks that could harm the local economy.
He indicated that issuing alarmist messages could negatively affect the arrival of visitors to tourist destinations like Mazatlán.
“I don’t want to ridicule or stigmatize these issues, because, well, ultimately, there are also many good citizens in Sinaloa who work in the tourism sector, and statements like these that discourage the presence and participation not only of people from Durango, but of all the people who go to Mazatlán in some way, would be problematic,” he stated.
Although he avoided discouraging travel, the official insisted on the importance of taking safety precautions. He asked tourists to remain vigilant, recommended planning routes and schedules, and emphasized the importance of prevention.
One of the issues that has caused concern is the alleged recruitment by criminal groups. The official asked that the cases not be generalized.
The official pointed out that not all incidents are forced, although he acknowledged that there is public concern.
“Yes, and I’ll say it again, let’s be careful. And regarding the issue of forced recruitment, I also put it in quotes. Many times it’s not forced. Well, I mean, we saw it, you all witnessed it with the case of these two young men,” he added.
The statements come before the holiday period, crucial for the regional economy. Mazatlán is one of the most visited destinations. Tourism is a local economic engine.
