Dozens of Indigenous families from mountain communities in Durango have been displaced, fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in nearby towns due to the escalating violence plaguing the border region with Nayarit.
The situation worsened after the killing of criminal leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” in late February, which sparked a power struggle between rival criminal groups in the region.
“In Buena Ventura, we have many families scattered across different communities. For example, in Guajolota, near San Francisco de Ocotán, because of events that I know occurred a month ago in the border area with the state of Nayarit,” commented Bernabé Aguilar Carrillo, a local congressman.
After detecting the emergency, authorities located several of the displaced families who had taken refuge with relatives in neighboring municipalities, while others traveled to the state capital seeking humanitarian aid.
“One hundred families. I met 70 families recently when I visited Sihuacora. I spoke with them there,” the legislator added.
The affected region is considered strategic for drug trafficking due to its isolated geography, which favors illicit crops, drug trafficking routes, and provides refuge for criminal groups.
