The Isthmus of Tehuantepec region registered the highest percentage of femicides in the state of Oaxaca from December 2022 to December 2025, according to data from the Observatory of Femicide Violence of the Rosario Castellanos Women’s Studies Group (GESMujer).

According to the organization, 287 women were violently murdered during this period, an average of 95 women per year or two women murdered every week in the state.

Among these victims were 83 girls and adolescents under the age of 18, representing 14 percent of the femicides registered in Oaxaca.

While the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region accounts for 29% of all violent murders of women, the Central Valleys region and the Coast region each account for 19%, these two regions have the highest levels of femicide violence.

It is the home, with 33% of cases, where girls and women have been violently murdered, and in 60% of these deaths, firearms were used.

“The declaration of a gender violence alert in 40 municipalities of Oaxaca has been insufficient. Since 2018, 788 outrageous cases have been registered,” the organization states.

Furthermore, it warns that disappearances of women and girls are on the rise in the state. As an example, it cites July 2025, the month in which 37 girls and women disappeared, nine of whom identified as Indigenous. Twenty-four were found alive, twelve remain missing, and one was found dead.

“The lack of public information from the responsible government institutions (statistics, quantification, and mapping) is a major concern. To date, there is no updated registry or official mechanisms to understand and assess the reality of the violence women face,” warns the Collective Action for Human Rights in Oaxaca.

They maintain that institutional support is limited and, in many cases, victims are left without comprehensive follow-up, which exacerbates their vulnerability.
