Yucatán has completed its first shipment of mamey to the United Kingdom, a historic event that opens a new export route for this emblematic Yucatecan fruit in international markets.

This achievement is the result of more than three years of work to meet the phytosanitary and quality standards demanded by one of the world’s most stringent markets, allowing Yucatecan mamey to now reach Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with the United Kingdom as a new strategic destination.

The mamey (Pouteria sapota), a fruit native to Mesoamerica, has its main production area in Mexico in Yucatán and stands out for its quality, flavor, and sweetness levels of between 30 and 32 degrees Brix, characteristics that place it among the best in the world.

Julio Magaña, Marketing Manager of Huertas Magaña, the company that produces the mamey for export, highlighted the impact of this achievement for the state’s rural communities.

In the state, mamey cultivation is concentrated in the south, particularly in municipalities such as Akil, Oxkutzcab, Tekax, and Maní, where more than 5,000 producers work 3,000 hectares dedicated to planting and harvesting this fruit.

Although he did not specify the amount of mamey that will be exported to the United Kingdom throughout the year, he stated that Yucatán is the leading producer of this fruit nationally, with an annual harvest of approximately 11,000 to 13,000 tons.

“This shipment is the result of the hard work of many people in the fields. We are very proud to see that a product born in our lands is now reaching international markets and generating new opportunities for our communities,” he noted.

He indicated that the exported mamey is produced in Huertas Magaña and marketed internationally through the company Sweet Seasons, an alliance that has allowed them to position this fruit in markets such as France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and now the United Kingdom.

“This shipment represents a historic step for Yucatecan agriculture. It is the result of years of work, meeting international standards, and demonstrating that the quality of our products can compete in the most demanding markets in the world,” said Julio Magaña.
