Members of the Coscomatepec Municipal Police, a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Town) in the central mountainous region of the state of Veracruz, were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and dereliction of duty.
The six officers were detained by the State Attorney General’s Office on the evening of Friday, April 10, while they were at the municipal facilities.
The detainees were identified as Anselmo N, Jesús N, Diego N, Lauro Arturo N, Dana Natalia N, and Bonifacio N.
In addition to personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, members of the National Defense Secretariat and the Veracruz State Public Security Secretariat arrived at the scene.
“They served as members of the Municipal Police of said city, as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of dereliction of duty and drug trafficking,” the State Attorney General’s Office press release states.
During the operation, authorities seized plastic bags containing what appeared to be marijuana, as well as tactical and communications equipment, all of which will be included as evidence in the corresponding investigation.
The municipal police station was placed under the protection of state and federal forces, while the detainees were transferred and presented before a judge to determine their legal status.
