The Guerrero State Tourism Secretariat reported that during the long weekend for International Workers’ Day, Guerrero registered an overall average hotel occupancy rate of 83.1 percent, and Acapulco reached 85.6 percent, with 17,000 hotel rooms occupied. This represents a 4.7 and 6.2 percentage point increase compared to 2025, respectively.
In its statistical report for the long weekend, the state saw an occupancy rate of 59.1 percent on Friday, 94.1 percent on Saturday, and 96.1 percent on Sunday, for a total of 83.1 percent across its more than 30,000 rooms. In 2025, the occupancy rate was 78.4 percent.
In Acapulco, the occupancy rate for the 17,000 rooms was 62.6 percent on Friday, 96.4 percent on Saturday, and 97.8 percent on Sunday, for a total of 85.6 percent. In 2025, the overall average occupancy rate was 79.4 percent.
This Sunday, according to the zone statistics, the Golden Zone reached 99 percent occupancy, followed by the Traditional Zone with 96.7 percent, and the Diamond Zone with 96.4 percent.
The president of the Acapulco Hotel and Tourism Business Association (AHETA), José Luis Smithers Jiménez, described the hotel occupancy rate as “unprecedented,” noting the large number of families who came to visit Acapulco.
“I went for a drive along the Costera on Saturday night, and everything, absolutely everything, was full, and traffic was crawling.” He said this large influx is due to the effective strategy and promotional campaign for Guerrero’s tourist destinations, as well as the exposure Acapulco received nationally and internationally at the Tianguis Turístico (Tourism Fair), which lasted a week. Acapulco was featured throughout those days on television and radio news programs and social media by major media outlets in all 32 states of Mexico.
The president of the Acapulco Traditional Hotels and Restaurants Association, Francisco Aguilar Ordóñez, indicated that families who decided to come to Acapulco at the last minute began visiting different hotels in the Traditional Zone on Friday in search of a room, but all were full.
“There were so many people, which bodes well for a 100 percent occupancy rate by the end of the year. Now we need more hotel rooms, but we have to get to work and expand our capacity,” he said.
The president of the Pie de la Cuesta Restaurant and Hotel Association, Nelly Mejía Cienfuegos, shared that in the “magical neighborhood” (a nickname for the area), some families arrived at hotels as late as 1:00 a.m. looking for rooms, but found none.
She indicated that one of the factors contributing to the high occupancy rates in that area of the city was an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting that filled hotels from Pie de la Cuesta to the Coyuca de Benítez riverbank.
She noted that on Sunday, many people were still eating in restaurants before heading home, primarily from the central states of the country.
The association president affirmed that this large influx of tourists is the result of tourist caravans and the promotional efforts and strategies of the Guerrero and Acapulco Tourism Secretariats.
The beach resort of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo closed out the first long weekend of May with one of its highest occupancy rates so far this year, averaging 95.6 percent of its hotel rooms occupied on Sunday, May 3.
According to official statistics from the Guerrero Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo maintained an upward trend since Friday, May 1, solidifying its position alongside Acapulco as a favorite among domestic tourists during this long weekend commemorating Labor Day and the Battle of Puebla.
Ixtapa reached 96.9 percent occupancy, Zihuatanejo 80.2 percent, La Unión 76.1 percent, and surprisingly, Taxco achieved 100 percent hotel room occupancy.
Yesterday, a drive along the boulevard in Ixtapa’s Hotel Zone I revealed heavy traffic and tour buses, signaling the beginning of the return of hundreds of visitors to their homes.
However, the exodus didn’t dampen the area’s energy. While hundreds were leaving the hotels, hundreds more continued enjoying the warm waters of El Palmar beach, which was packed with sunbathers under the traditional palapas and along the sand.
Meanwhile, the neighboring municipality of La Unión also experienced a significant increase in tourism; the Riviera Troncones-La Saladita area registered an average occupancy rate of 71.4 percent this past weekend.
