A municipal leader of the Morena party was exposed on social media after images circulated showing him consuming a maned wolf turtle, a species protected under federal environmental regulations. This sparked criticism and demands for authorities to investigate and punish the case.
The leader in question was identified as Antonio Silván, Morena’s leader in the municipality of Macuspana, Tabasco. The photographs began circulating this past weekend and provoked outrage among users and activists, who pointed out that consuming this species could constitute a violation of environmental legislation, as it is a protected wild animal.
In the images, the leader is seen sitting at a table wearing a cap with the Morena logo, while handling food that, according to the complaints, appears to be turtle meat.
The case gained prominence because the individual in question is a Morena leader in Macuspana, a municipality considered emblematic for the Morena movement as it is the birthplace of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the party’s founder.
The Morena party member has not issued a public statement, and no environmental authority had reported the opening of any proceedings.
According to posts circulating on social media, the green sea turtle is listed in NOM-059-SEMARNAT, which categorizes species at risk and establishes restrictions on their capture, sale, and consumption.
Users also demanded the intervention of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and its head, Mariana Boy, to ensure that legal action is taken.
