The Wild Harvest and the art of celebrating wine in San Miguel de Allende

76

On the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende, amidst fields of vineyards, olive groves, and lavender, the Vendimia Brava (Wild Harvest) of La Santísima Trinidad vineyards takes place. Every year, towards the end of April or the beginning of May, this vineyard becomes the setting for a celebration that combines wine and tradition in a deeply sensory, family-friendly festival featuring equestrian art and flamenco music. The Vendimia Brava (Wild Harvest) festival has its roots in Seville, where the festive spirit of Andalusia takes over the streets and fields during the famous Seville Fair, declared of International Tourist Interest. This tradition traveled to Guanajuato, and specifically to the vineyards of La Santísima Trinidad, which, since 2024, has attracted more than 700 people of all ages dressed in traditional Seville Fair attire, while also incorporating the local landscape and rhythm.

Starting at 2:00 PM, the Vendimia Brava begins to unfold all its magic and energy. Entire families, from children to grandparents, stroll through the vineyard sporting Andalusian touches: ruffled dresses, Sevillian hats, fans, and vibrant colors. The setting is one of pure enjoyment, with tables set up in typical April Fair booths, wine stations, and food stalls. In the center, a bullring invites everyone to appreciate the equestrian shows and flamenco dance performances that take place throughout the festival.

Throughout the day, the artistic expressions of the Andalusian people appear in different forms: stages that emerge amidst conversations, music that blends with the sounds of the countryside, stages that come alive with powerful flamenco guitars and transform as the day progresses. The Vendimia Brava (Wild Harvest Festival) at this vineyard in San Miguel de Allende is thus built in layers, without a single focal point.

Interspersed with the flamenco dances, the horses take center stage. The equestrian displays add rhythm to the experience, culminating in a finale as the light changes: a spectacle where riders interact with flaming lances, marking the transition from afternoon to night. Afterward, the sky becomes the stage: a drone show paints luminous figures reminiscent of wine, the participants in the grape harvest, and flamenco dancers seemingly suspended in mid-air. This spectacle remained a topic of conversation among attendees long after the show ended.

At the heart of it all are the wines of La Santísima Trinidad, designed to complement the rhythm of the day. This year, the new Barrica de Fuego wine line was unveiled, featuring the 2023 oak-aged Malbec, a wine with a smooth and balanced entry, silky tannins, a long finish, and aftertaste of chocolate and coffee. Sparkling wines and young labels, best enjoyed at cool temperatures and especially outdoors, were also presented. Among them, their barrel-aged white stands out, offering structure without sacrificing lightness: perfect for strolling through the vineyard, glass in hand.

La Santísima Trinidad’s flagship line has been recognized at international competitions such as the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, where it has won Grand Gold medals. These wines accompanied the attendees of the Vendimia Brava as night fell, when the best conversations took center stage.

Drinking these wines during the Vendimia Brava at this vineyard in San Miguel de Allende is not an isolated act: it’s part of the day’s narrative. Each glass accompanies a different moment, from the bright start to the evening’s close.

Thinking about the next Vendimia Brava also means thinking about returning to Viñedos La Santísima Trinidad at another time of year. The vineyard extends its offering beyond the harvest with what they call La Santísima Experiencia (The Santísima Experience), comprised of activities that keep the connection with the wine and the landscape alive.

Among the highlights are the Polo Cups, which combine sport and hospitality in an open-air setting, and the Catrinas Dinner, which explores a more theatrical narrative linked to Mexican Day of the Dead traditions. In addition, there are tours, tastings, and stays that allow visitors to experience the vineyard at a more relaxed pace.

The Vendimia Brava (Wild Harvest) at this vineyard in San Miguel de Allende thus serves as a gateway. Those who come for the festivities often find reasons to return.
