According to the update released today, Monday, May 11, to the “Who’s Who in Basic Food Basket Prices” program monitored by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), Jalisco has one of the most expensive supermarkets in the entire country. For our state, the comparison is made with states such as Baja California Sur, Aguascalientes, Durango, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas. The monitoring took place from April 27 to 30, 2026.

The price of the basic food basket during this period ranged from a maximum of $950 pesos to a minimum of approximately $800 pesos. The limit agreed upon by Profeco is $910 pesos for the 24 products.

It’s important to note that the quantities included in the Basic Food Basket were calculated considering the weekly consumption of a four-person household, based on the findings of the 2020 Population and Housing Census published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), dividing the total population by the number of census households (126,014,024 inhabitants/35,219,141 census households).

Which is the most expensive supermarket in Jalisco, according to Profeco?
The Walmart located at 821 Ramón López Velarde Avenue in the Lomas del Paradero neighborhood of Guadalajara is the most expensive supermarket in all of Jalisco. The price offered for the 24 products in the Basic Food Basket was $962.50 pesos. It’s worth noting that, despite being the highest price in the state and one of the most expensive in the region, the amount is below the limit set by Profeco.

The highest price for the basic food basket was recorded at the Bodega Aurrerá Centro in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The price, as reported by Profeco (the Federal Consumer Protection Agency), was $969.50 pesos for the 24 products on the list.

Similarly, the cheapest supermarket in Jalisco is located in Guadalajara.

Basic food basket price remains stable despite increases in tomato and tortilla prices.

To mitigate the impact of inflation on households, the federal government and the private sector have strengthened their joint strategies. On April 17, 2026, Profeco confirmed that the agreement for the Package Against Inflation and the High Cost of Living (PACIC) remains in effect, setting a maximum price of $910 pesos for the 24 essential products in the basic food basket.

The agreement remains in place despite the increase in the individual price of tomatoes and tortillas. In recent days, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) registered a historic increase in the price of this staple vegetable. At the same time, the price of tomatoes has seen several price increases, both for round and saladette tomatoes.

Today, Attorney General Escalante Gonzalbo promoted a new tool that allows users to check the individual price of each product in the Basic Food Basket. Regarding the price of tomatoes, the Attorney General recommended buying tomatillos as a substitute until the price of tomatoes decreases.
