Jalisco consolidates its position on the international stage by formally joining the prestigious Michelin Guide.
The state Tourism Secretariat confirmed that the official awards gala will take place on May 20, 2026, where restaurants in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and Puerto Vallarta will receive the coveted Michelin Stars and Bib Gourmand distinctions for the first time.
This addition is part of the guide’s strategic expansion in the country. The recognition will not only reward haute cuisine but will also open the door for traditional establishments, such as cenadurías (small, informal restaurants) and taquerias (taco stands), to obtain the Bib Gourmand seal, which highlights the excellent balance between quality and affordability.
The head of the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, highlighted the significance of this milestone for the state: “Jalisco possesses a deep and rooted identity; therefore, receiving a platform as prestigious as Michelin not only fills us with pride, but also commits us to continue being the benchmark for the highest expression of Mexico to the world.”
The arrival of the guide represents fundamental support for the local economy, considering that the tourism sector contributes 9.2% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With an ecosystem that exceeds 46,000 food and beverage establishments, the international certification will boost employment and investment in key municipalities such as Zapopan, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta.
Jalisco’s designation as a Host City coincides with a year of high global visibility, as the state will also host matches of the FIFA World Cup and the first edition of the ITB Americas tourism fair. This combination of events seeks to stimulate connectivity, attract foreign investment, and strengthen regional competitiveness.
Looking ahead to 2027, the government plan envisions the development of sustainable culinary routes that connect cultural and natural heritage. Among the initiatives highlighted are the Tequila Routes in the agave landscape and new signature projects in the Costalegre region, such as the Xala development, designed under strict criteria of respect for the local community.
