The arrest of two Cuban nationals in Puerto Morelos has opened a new line of investigation that has state authorities analyzing the possible existence of a network linked to illicit activities in Quintana Roo.
During the Security Council meeting held this Monday in Chetumal, the state’s Attorney General, Raciel López Salazar, confirmed the arrest of Alexander “N” and Andys Luis “N,” who face charges of assault and threats against an elderly woman and her son.
According to the investigation file, the events occurred on May 25 in the Villas Morelos subdivision, where the victim was arriving home when she was intercepted by one of the now-detained men, with whom she had a dispute regarding the boundaries of an adjacent property.
The investigation indicates that during the confrontation, the woman suffered a head injury. Her son intervened to help her but was also allegedly assaulted by both men. After the incident, those involved fled the scene.
The case gained prominence after a video of the assault was shared on social media, prompting residents to mobilize and hold a demonstration in front of the home of one of the accused. The intervention of law enforcement prevented the situation from escalating.
The State Attorney General’s Office reported that, following the victims’ complaint, an arrest warrant was requested and obtained from a judge. The two suspects were located, arrested, and placed at the disposal of the corresponding judicial authority.
During the press conference, López Salazar indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are analyzing information related to the suspects’ background and activities, as part of an effort to determine if other individuals are linked to these events or other illicit activities in the area.
The detainees will remain in custody pending a hearing to determine their legal status within the constitutional timeframe.
