Yucatán Records 28 Cases of Human Myiasis

Yucatán has emerged as the third-ranking state in terms of the number of affected individuals, recording 28 confirmed cases, in addition to one death associated with this disease—that of a woman originally from Mérida.

The cases detected within Yucatán’s territory are distributed across 23 municipalities: Buctzotz, Cenotillo, Dzan, Dzoncauich, Izamal, Kanasín, Maní, Maxcanú, Mérida, Motul, Peto, Progreso, Río Lagartos, Sacalum, Teabo, Tecoh, Tekal de Venegas, Tekit, Tekom, Ticul, Tixpéhual, Uayma, and Yaxcabá.

The monthly report on the status of the disease reveals that the Yucatán Peninsula currently accounts for 55 positive cases, equivalent to 17.63 percent of the national total.

As of last April, the country had accumulated 312 confirmed human cases, representing a 36.24 percent increase compared to March, according to data from the federal Secretariat of Health.

The highest incidence of the disease continues to be localized in Chiapas, where 126 patient cases have been confirmed—accounting for 40.38 percent of all cases registered nationwide. Veracruz ranks second with 50 infections, while Yucatán occupies the third position with 28 affected individuals.
