New toll plaza on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway: Why is the Tepotzotlán one being relocated, what are the benefits, and when will it be ready?

56

The relocation of the Tepotzotlán toll plaza is a done deal. Federal authorities are managing the project, which will bring several benefits to motorists who use the Mexico-Querétaro highway daily. Here are the details and the scheduled completion date for the new toll plaza on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway.

Where will the Tepotzotlán toll plaza be located?

The toll plaza is situated on the Mexico-Querétaro highway. It will be moved 14 kilometers to the north to reduce traffic congestion on one of the country’s busiest roadways.

The new facility will be located past the Jorobas area, in the municipality of Huehuetoca. This measure aims to improve mobility for the thousands of motorists and freight transporters who face daily delays on this highway corridor in the State of Mexico.

The announcement is part of a comprehensive plan that also includes widening the highway to increase capacity and expedite the movement of goods and passengers.

Benefits of the new toll plaza on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway
The Mexico-Querétaro highway sees over 200,000 vehicles pass through daily, a volume that has turned the current Tepotzotlán toll plaza into a major traffic bottleneck in the region.

Relocating the toll point will help reduce the daily queues formed by both private vehicles and freight transport. The measure also addresses long-standing requests from local residents, business owners, and motorists.

Business organizations and the “México Emprende” National Network championed the proposal to facilitate the distribution of goods to logistics centers located in the northern part of the Valley of Mexico.

Authorities estimate that the relocation will directly benefit residents of Huehuetoca, Coyotepec, Teoloyucan, Tepotzotlán, Cuautitlán Izcalli, and Zumpango—municipalities where traffic jams routinely disrupt local travel. One of the expected benefits is that motorists making short trips between these localities will no longer have to pay the full toll to travel within the region, potentially resulting in cost savings and smoother traffic flow.

In addition to relocating the toll plaza, authorities will expand the roadway. The plan involves increasing capacity to eight lanes in each direction—an upgrade that will begin at the Tepalcapa section and extend to the current toll plaza location, with the possibility of further extension to the new tolling point.

The project aims to address the steady growth in traffic volume and improve driving conditions on one of the key access routes to the nation’s capital.

Another factor considered in the project is the frequency with which the toll plaza area is used for protests and road blockades. By relocating the tolling point, authorities hope to reduce the impact these actions have on national traffic and the transport of goods.

Funding for the new toll plaza on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway will be drawn from the 2026 fiscal year expenditure budget. Work is set to begin in the coming weeks, though no completion date has been set yet.
