Those who have recently strolled along Mérida’s Gastronomic Corridor have enjoyed a striking urban intervention: two large crocheted pieces in a wide range of colors now cover part of 47th Street, between 54th and 56th Streets, providing shade and visually transforming the space.
The structures were created by the Cielo Tejido collective, made up of around 200 artisans from Etzatlán, Jalisco, led by Lorena Ron and her mother, Paloma Siordia. The group specializes in creating monumental textile installations that have been exhibited throughout the country.
The creators of the original “shade mesh” are artisans from the Cielo Tejido collective, originally from Etzatlán, Jalisco, and hold a Guinness World Record.
The two colorful crocheted structures, one 30 meters long and the other 18 meters, cover part of 47th Street and transform the Gastronomic Corridor.
Their work achieved international recognition in 2019 with a Guinness World Record for weaving a 2,850-square-meter pavilion that covered four streets in downtown Etzatlán.

Although the installation in Mérida is smaller, it maintains the collective’s distinctive style. In this case, it consists of two pieces: one 30 meters long and the other 18 meters, both suspended above the gastronomic corridor.
The installation is part of a collaboration between the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) and the Corazón de Mérida program, promoted by the Mérida City Council. As a result of this partnership, the “Goal by Goal” activation was launched, designed to capitalize on the influx of visitors during the World Cup and boost the local economy.

In addition to the textiles, the initiative includes the installation of tables, chairs, high-top tables, and beer bars in the outdoor areas of the establishments, as well as the broadcast of various sporting events.
Among the matches scheduled to be shown were Mexico vs. South Korea on Thursday; Mexico vs. Czech Republic on Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.; Uruguay vs. Spain on June 26 at 5:30 p.m.; Colombia vs. Portugal on June 27 at 5:00 p.m.; and Argentina vs. Jordan that same day at 9:00 p.m.
