Oaxaca consolidated its position as the ninth most violent state in the country between January and May, reports the Public Security Secretariat

Oaxaca remains in ninth place nationally for extreme violence, with 378 documented murders between January and May 2026, the Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System confirmed this afternoon.

The federal government specified that Oaxaca recorded more homicides than Jalisco (355), Mexico City (351), and Michoacán (336), states that have at some point registered higher rates of violence than this southern state.

After the first five months of this year, the 10 most violent states in the country, according to official figures, are Guanajuato, with 668 victims of intentional homicide; Baja California, with 592; Chihuahua, with 590; Sinaloa, with 517; and Morelos, with 450.

Also included are the State of Mexico, with 449; Guerrero, with 418; and Veracruz, with 406. Oaxaca, with 375, and Jalisco, with 355.

The federal government stated that during the first five months of the year, the national average of homicides per state was 238.03 victims; that is, Oaxaca remained 40 cases above the average.

Finally, the federal government specified that the eight states with the highest rates of violence accounted for 54 percent of the homicides in the country.
