A woman from Mexicali, Baja California, died after falling from a recreational boat and being struck by its propeller off the coast of Progreso, Yucatán. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
According to local media reports in Yucatán, the victim was identified as Daniela L., a resident of Mexicali, Baja California.
Preliminary reports indicate that the recreational vessel, “El Negrillo,” was returning to Marina El Faro with seven people on board when the young woman reportedly fell into the water while the boat was still moving.
After falling overboard, she was struck by the boat’s propeller, suffering catastrophic injuries, including the complete amputation of her right arm and partial amputations of her left arm and left leg.
The other passengers rescued her from the water and transported her back to the marina, where paramedics from the Yucatán State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) provided emergency medical care.
Although she was transported alive to a hospital in Mérida, she suffered cardiac arrest during the rescue efforts. She was stabilized and rushed to Clínica Mérida, where medical personnel later confirmed her death due to the severity of her injuries.
The appropriate authorities carried out the initial investigative procedures and opened an inquiry to determine exactly how the accident occurred and whether any legal responsibility exists.
Reports circulating on social media claim that some of the people aboard the vessel—including the owner, the captain, and a crew member—had allegedly consumed alcoholic beverages before the incident.
However, this information has not been confirmed by authorities, and the investigation remains ongoing to establish the facts.
