Something curious is happening in Veracruz: while “ordinary” citizens are required to declare all their assets in order to increase the amount of taxes they pay, the state governor has just shielded herself so that no one can investigate the wealth she is accumulating.
The first step taken by state governor Rocío Nahle was to eliminate the Institute for Access to Information. Then, a few weeks ago, the Comptroller’s Office was reformed so that it would not investigate the assets accumulated by “its boss,” arguing that doing so would be too dangerous because criminals might be tempted to attack her.
Several journalists tested this change and requested, through transparency mechanisms, information on the properties, bank accounts, income, businesses, and other assets that Rocío Nahle has accumulated in recent years during her administration.
They were denied the information.
“She did this on the grounds that the declaration contained private information such as her real estate holdings, addresses, and bank accounts, and she decided not to issue a public version,” said journalist Jorge García Orozco.
So far, the state governor has not issu
ed a statement on the matter; in fact, she has not done so for several days, when she announced the registration of all journalists and reporters in her state, which is considered the most dangerous in the country for the media, since in just the last eleven months, five reporters have been murdered and six have been kidnapped.
