The tranquility of Mazatlán’s tourist area was interrupted Monday afternoon by an alleged shootout between two motorcyclists who chased each other and fired shots along Camarón Sábalo Avenue. The incident left a young man with a gunshot wound to one leg.
The shooting caused moments of panic among tourists, hotel employees, and motorists who were on this busy roadway. Witnesses said several people had to throw themselves to the ground to avoid being hit by any of the shots.
What happened during the shooting on Camarón Sábalo Avenue?
According to the first reports gathered at the scene, one of the motorcyclists was traveling from north to south, while the other was traveling in the opposite direction and allegedly caught up with him, initiating the chase and exchange of gunfire.
During the escape, one of the alleged gunmen lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into the front of a gray Honda automobile, whose driver was attempting to enter the El Cid residential development.
After the collision, the motorcyclist fell onto the pavement but managed to get back up and run toward the El Cid hotel facilities. The man used the stairs to seek safety.
However, during the chase, the young man was struck by bullets and suffered an injury to one of his legs. Upon hearing the gunshots and seeing the injured man, tourists and hotel workers in the area requested assistance from emergency services.
Injured young man receives medical attention at Mazatlán hotel
Minutes later, police officers and paramedics from Bomberos Veteranos Mazatlán arrived and found the injured man taking refuge in the hotel’s reception area.
The rescuers provided first aid, managed to stabilize him, and subsequently transported him to a hospital to receive medical attention.
Meanwhile, security forces deployed an operation around Camarón Sábalo Avenue in an attempt to locate and arrest those responsible for the shooting.
Despite the deployment of personnel, no information had been reported so far regarding the arrest of any of the alleged attackers.
Shooting raises concern in Mazatlán’s tourist area
The incident caused concern among visitors and tourism service providers because it occurred in the middle of Mazatlán’s tourist area, along one of the roads with the highest volume of visitors and motorists.
The incident occurred just a few hours after Mayor Estrella Palacios stated that more than 7,000 personnel from different agencies had been deployed to strengthen security in the municipality of Mazatlán.
