Burning of vehicles and blockades in Chiapas: Army entry into Motozintla unleashes wave of violence

The region has been conflicted due to a fight between the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel

Clashes, burning of vehicles, shots in the air and road blockades were some of the violent actions that took place on Wednesday evening in some towns in Chiapas, when elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the National Guard ( GN) took control of Motozintla security.

On Tuesday afternoon, elements of the Armed Forces left the Comalapa Border to Motozintla in order to enter the municipality and take charge of security tasks, however, residents of the Sierra opposed it and began a wave of violent actions that escalated until Wednesday night.

According to Proceso, the residents demanded that the military first dismantle the criminal groups that operate in Frontera Comalapa, such as El Maíz, an alleged armed wing of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) that has operated in the area for two years.
Citizens of the municipalities of Mazapa de Madero, La Grandeza, Chicomuselo, Bejucal de Ocampo, Motozintla and Siltepec blocked the main access roads, while they began to burn vehicles, tires and fired heavy caliber weapons to scare them away, as they point out that they did not trust their presence, since they are accused of giving protection to groups of extortionists.

It was not until Wednesday afternoon that an anti-riot team was able to break the town’s siege and entered Motozintla, freeing the main roads.

So far the authorities have not announced that there are any people injured by these violent events.

It should be noted that the mountain region of Chiapas is under fire from the armed wings of the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel, which has generated a wave of homicides, disappearances and constant confrontations.

In videos that circulated on social networks you can see how the convoys were formed in a row, unable to pass; In other clips, citizens are heard saying that they are not armed and ask them to go capture the real criminals.

In other images, the military can also be seen pointing their weapons at citizens, while they assure them that they are not afraid of them and that they will not let them pass.
