The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) company was the only one that presented a proposal to operate a passenger train on the Mexico-Querétaro route, as confirmed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador this morning.
The proposal, which includes the possibility of extending the route to Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, is being analyzed by the Mexican authorities. The president highlighted that the railway company has carried out a study on the tracks, which will be delivered to the government in May. In addition, the president announced that he will send an initiative to Congress as part of his reform package; seeking that the State recover the right to use concessioned cargo tracks for passenger trains, covering approximately 18 thousand kilometers.
It is one of the initiatives that will be proposed, so that it remains in the Constitution that the State resumes its right to use the concessioned cargo tracks for passenger trains, “said AMLO.
The CPKC, which already operates freight and passenger trains in the United States and Canada, showed its interest in entering the Mexican market; but it is not the only company that has expressed interest in operating passenger trains.
Jorge Nuño Lara, head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), revealed that Grupo México, led by Germán Larrea, has also expressed its interest.
We have received the official letters from both Grupo México and Canadian Pacific Kansas City. They established the routes and we are analyzing the official letters, they were all positive, “said Nuño Lara.
For some months, the López Obrador government outlined its plan to develop seven passenger train routes; same that could cover important destinations in Mexico, from Veracruz to Ciudad Juárez.
The project of President López Obrador seeks to boost rail transport and improve connectivity in the country.
