The NHC activated surveillance to monitor the formation of the low pressure system

Prevén la llegada del Huracán Aletta

Hurricane Aletta remains a low pressure system, however, it maintains a high probability of forming on the Pacific coast, so estimates indicate that it could hit the Mexican territory as of May 17, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN). The meteorological agency forecasts 15 to 18 systems in the Pacific Ocean, as well as 20 to 23 in the Atlantic, of which five are likely to impact Mexico.

The states that Hurricane Aletta will affect will be Jalisco, Colima, Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sinaloa, so the western coasts of the country will be the ones that will receive the main consequences of this phenomenon, whose wind gusts may exceed 80 kilometers per hour.

There is a 30 percent chance of cyclonic activity

In the mentioned states, heavy rains, winds and storm surge are expected. However, the category with which the hurricane will arrive is unknown, so it is not yet possible to determine if the authorities will have to take preventive measures for possible natural disasters.

In addition, the National Meteorological Service predicts gusts of wind of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour with possible dust devils in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora and Sinaloa, as well as occasional rains in Nuevo León, very heavy occasional rains in Tamaulipas and intervals of showers in Coahuila and San Luis Potosí.

For its part, the National Hurricane Center activated surveillance over the next few days to stay aware of the basin and cautiously observe the formation of a low pressure area. The authorities recommend staying informed in case of any meteorological eventuality.

It is worth remembering the devastating effects left by Category 5 Hurricane Otis last October 2023, when more than 220,000 homes were affected. This state is located in southwest Mexico, so it connects with the Pacific Ocean. The damage remains in force and the Government of Mexico continues with reconstruction work and support programs for the people of Guerrero.
