City. Durango is the fourth most peaceful state in the country, where people live better and with greater security, according to a study by the Institute for Economy and Peace.

Ciudad. Durango es el cuarto estado más pacífico del país, donde la gente vive mejor y con mayor seguridad, de acuerdo con un estudio del Instituto para la Economía y la Paz.

According to the Global Peace Index of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), which measures the peace of countries on the planet, in 2023 Yucatán was the most peaceful state in the country for the seventh consecutive year; Durango placed fourth.

The Global Peace Index is a report prepared by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) that measures the relative peace position of nations and regions.

This index ranks 163 independent countries and territories (together representing 99.7 percent of the world’s population) according to their levels of peace.

In the peace classification in Mexico, Yucatán continues to be the entity with the greatest peace for the seventh consecutive year; They were followed by Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Durango and Coahuila as the five best qualified and with the greatest pacification.

The biggest improvement that Durango registers in this pacification is in relation to violence and crime, where it managed to improve 12.8 percentage points in 2023.

The state with the greatest deterioration in pacification in 2023 is Nayarit, which fell from third place to sixth.

PEACE IN MEXICO IMPROVED IN 2023

The analysis carried out by the Institute for Economy and Peace (IEP) reveals that Mexico’s peace improved by 1.4 percent from 2022 to 2023, being the fourth year of improvements.

In 2023, the five indicators of the Mexican Peace Index (MPI) improved; homicide is the one that registered the greatest improvement. A total of 17 states in the country deteriorated their peace in the last year, while 15 improved it.

The violent crime indicator also recorded an improvement in 2023, with its rate decreasing by 0.8 percent. Despite this, only 12 states experienced improvements, while 20 recorded deterioration.

DURANGO, WITHOUT POLITICAL VIOLENCE

Another point that is measured in this pacification index is political violence and, according to this study, in Durango only a single case of political violence has been recorded; Only Baja California Sur has fewer cases, which has zero violent political events.

Between 2018 and 2023, political violence, the study says, has been mainly directed at political or government personnel operating in municipal offices.

Of the more than a thousand incidents recorded in these five years, police stations have been the ones most attacked, mainly those at the municipal level.

Attacks against state-level officials, candidates, staff and their family members have been the next most common, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all attacks. Violent attacks against people at the federal level have been less common, representing less than six percent of the total population.

GUERRERO, THE ONE WITH THE MOST POLITICAL VIOLENCE

The states that register the highest number of violent political attacks are Guerrero, with 128; Veracruz, 122, and Oaxaca, 29. And the three with the fewest attacks are Baja California Sur, with zero; Durango and Yucatán, both with only one from 2018 to 2023.

These data do not include the political attacks recorded so far in 2024, which have also increased, mainly in Guerrero.
