Claudia Sheinbaum’s Government Proposes Cuts to Funding for AMLO’s Major Mega-Projects in 2027 Budget
The government of Claudia Sheinbaum is proposing that in the 2027 budget, the main mega-projects and initiatives promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador — the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), the Maya Train, and Mexicana de Aviación — receive between 29 and 41 percent less funding.
According to the Proposed Expenditure Budget, in the case of the Maya Train, its funding for next year is proposed at 19.27 billion pesos, representing a 39 percent decrease compared with 2026, when 32 billion pesos were allocated to the mega-project.
One of the pending tasks for this railway project is to enable its infrastructure to transport cargo, ranging from food to any type of material.
Regarding AIFA, the 2027 economic package stipulates that it will receive 2.43 billion pesos in funding, representing a 29 percent reduction compared with the previous period.
In recent months, the airport has experienced difficult circumstances due to a loss of air connectivity to the United States resulting from measures ordered by President Donald Trump.
The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway is the only mega-project that will receive an increase in its budget, obtaining 25.546 billion pesos, which is 7 percent more than it received a year ago.
Regarding the airline Mexicana de Aviación, it will suffer a 41 percent cut, leaving its funding at 1.012 billion pesos.
The federal government has stated that the airline was created to increase air connectivity to certain destinations within the country and provide broader access to the population to this transportation system.
