Cancún, Quintana Roo, has become a focal point for real estate investment. Currently, the state has registered over 600 professional real estate licenses, but it remains a challenge to cover the more than 3,000 agents active in the market.
In response to an exponential increase in demand for real estate in Quintana Roo, state authorities have made continuous training mandatory for real estate agents operating in the market. Among other requirements, agents must obtain a certification of technological skills.
For this reason, Proptech Latam Academy has formed a strategic alliance with the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development of the State of Quintana Roo (Sedetus) and the real estate firm EDREI Group, to develop academic programs aimed at industry professionals with a focus on innovation.
According to Enrique Domínguez, founder of EDREI Group and former president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI) in Playa del Carmen, at the beginning of the current state administration, there were no more than 230 real estate licenses registered; by April 2024, the number rose to 619.
“Thanks to the efforts of the Secretariat to regulate real estate professionals, this number has been achieved; but it is still a challenge to cover the more than 3,000 real estate agents practicing the profession,” commented the expert.
Rubén Frattini, founder and CEO of Proptech Latam, pointed out that the program’s goal is to ensure that real estate agents not only meet the requirement of having a license but also understand what can be achieved through a vision based on technology and innovation.
“We are talking about incorporating technology in property management to using Artificial Intelligence for sales. The issue is that those companies or professionals who start using these tools sooner will be more competitive and attractive for investment,” he said in an interview.
Opportunities in the Tourism Sector
Quintana Roo stands out as one of the Mexican states with the greatest potential for real estate investment, thanks to its strong tourism vocation with more than 20 million visitors a year.
In 2023 alone, about 700 real estate developments began construction in the northern and southern parts of the state. These developments, which will be completed between 2024 and 2025, consolidate the region as one of the most dynamic in the country’s industry.
In this context, Proptech Latam Academy created the academic program for “Management of Tourist Real Estate Projects with Technology,” which will be available from the second half of 2024 and aims to certify up to 300 real estate professionals annually.
“Most professionals are exclusively dedicated to selling new properties, but the new real estate agent can also make headway in managing temporary rentals. We see that up to five more roles can be fulfilled, which will improve income sources while the market is strengthened with specialized individuals who, beyond good intentions, serve with full knowledge of what they do,” added Frattini.
