Mexico has reaffirmed its tourism goal for the six-year term: to position itself as the fifth most-visited country in the world. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated this during her morning press conference held at the Veracruz Naval Air Base, acknowledging that it is a highly ambitious objective.
“We have set a very ambitious goal: to move from sixth to fifth place among the world’s most-visited countries. That is this administration’s aim, and we are confident we will achieve it. The Secretary of Tourism is doing a great job, as are the governors in their respective states,” she affirmed.
The president also highlighted the sector’s recent results. Between January and November 2024, 77.4 million international visitors were recorded, while in the same period of 2025, the figure rose by 13.4%, reaching 88.1 million tourists. She also noted that visitor spending had increased.

Speaking from Veracruz, she reaffirmed the principles governing the bilateral relationship, amidst the controversy surrounding the landing of a U.S. aircraft at Toluca Airport in the State of Mexico. The president explained that the understanding between the two countries rests on four pillars accepted by Washington:
Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity
Shared but differentiated responsibility regarding security
Mutual respect and trust
Cooperation without subordination
“The United States conducts its operations within its own territory, just as we work for the security of the Mexican people within ours. These are the principles that govern our cooperation,” she noted.
For his part, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, clarified that the travel of personnel from his agency on the U.S. aircraft was in response to an invitation from Northern Command, based in Mississippi. He specified that these training sessions have been taking place for years and that each one has the corresponding formal backing, whether by invitation from the United States or at the request of the Mexican government.
