Querétaro in the 6th place with the highest migrant reception

In Querétaro, migration has become the basis of population growth. And while the fertility rate drops, the state becomes the sixth entity with the highest recruitment of people who were born in other places in the Republic.

According to the National Demographic Dynamics Survey (ENADID) 2023 of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the fertility rate, that is, how many children mothers have had in the last five years, fell 17%, to go from 1.93 in 2018 to 1.60 in 2023.

At the same time, the state population reached 2 million 519 thousand 794 Querétaro residents, encouraged by the arrival of 99 thousand 37 new residents from other entities in the country, which made Querétaro the sixth state in the country with the largest reception of migrant population, with a rate of 4.2%.

In fact, currently 27.6% of the total population of Querétaro, which is equivalent to 568,945 people, are people from other states. In addition to the 16,779 foreigners who have established their residence in the town.

The ENADID indicates that, of the 16,779 foreigners residing in Querétaro, 55.3%, that is, 9,276, have Mexican nationality, and the remaining 7,503 (44.7%) do not have it.

In this same period, indicates the INEGI, Queretaro residents have also left their residence in the state to look for new spaces in other entities in the country. In this circumstance of internal mobility, 89,167 people born in Querétaro have emigrated.

In such a way that the migration balance for Querétaro is 0.4%, which corresponds to the difference between those who leave and those who arrive, being 9,870 more people who have made the state their home.

At the national level, the results of ENADID 2023 show that 81.8% of the total population resided in the same entity where they were born, while 18.2% (23.6 million people) were born in an entity other than their current residence, being the entities with the highest percentages of people who were born in a different federal entity Quintana Roo (48.2%), Baja California (40.2%) and Baja California Sur (38.2%).

However, the entities with 4.0% or more of their population aged 5 and older coming from another entity in the last five years are Baja California Sur (8.3%), Quintana Roo (7.6%) and Baja California (6.8%).

According to ENADID 2023 data, the main causes for the recent internal migrant population were reuniting with family (37.7%), changing or offering a job (13.9%), getting married or living with a partner, and looking for work (both with 10.6%).

“It is observed that reuniting with family was the main cause of the interstate and intrastate migrant population. However, the job search among the interstate migrant population exceeded the intrastate migrant population by 10.8 percentage points. For the interstate migrant population, getting married or living with your partner had a difference of 8.9 percentage points less compared to the intrastate migrant population,” he explains.
