The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has activated an assistance protocol for monkeys in Tabasco and Chiapas due to the increasing death of specimens caused by heat.
In coordination with local authorities, academic institutions, and civil society, efforts are being made to provide “health” to non-human primates.
The actions implemented so far include the formation of brigades of wildlife specialists; the establishment of coordination mechanisms with the Government of Tabasco and the Yukma’ Center for Interpretation and Coexistence with Nature.
Patrols for continuous verification of the conditions of the sites where monkey deaths have been reported.
Attention to fires and the performance of climatic analysis in the core area of reported impact.
Processing of samples from black howler monkeys and mantled howler monkeys to clarify the cause of death.
And the establishment of community surveillance committees to report any signs of possible impact on wildlife.
Semarnat is also developing an action protocol for the care of free-living primates affected by natural and anthropogenic phenomena.
In recent weeks, there has been a mass death of monkeys in Chiapas and Tabasco, a phenomenon attributed to high temperatures.
“They die because they get dizzy, and when they fall (from the trees), what kills them is the impact. The trauma and neurological damage caused by the fall,” explained biologist Silvia Santos.
