The energy company Iberdrola Mexico will supply 100% renewable electricity to the company Millfoods Company for its new non-genetically modified corn processing plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato state.

“We are pleased to strengthen ties with Millfoods, with whom we share the goal of reducing polluting emissions through clean energy. With this 100% renewable electricity supply contract, we are joining forces for a greener and more sustainable world,” said Katya Somohano, general manager of Iberdrola Mexico, at the contract signing event.

The agreement includes the acquisition of IRECs (International Renewable Energy Certificates), which guarantees that the contracted energy is completely renewable because it is linked to the generation of one of Iberdrola Mexico’s wind and photovoltaic plants.

According to data provided by Iberdrola Mexico, this electricity supply contract with Millfoods will prevent the annual emission of 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, the equivalent of the circulation of nearly 6,500 vehicles for one year or the carbon captured by more than 480,000 trees.

“This long-term agreement that we are starting with Iberdrola Mexico brings us closer to our goal of being carbon neutral and reaffirms our commitment to sustainability and the environment,” said Pilar Gutiérrez, CEO of Millfoods, a subsidiary of AMMI.

The non-genetically modified corn processing plant is scheduled to begin operations in August, and its products will be used primarily for the production of beer, as well as for processing flour for human and animal consumption, acquiring inputs from more than 20,000 local producers in Bajío. With an investment of 300 million dollars and a capacity to process one million tons, it is considered the most advanced in the region and the largest in the world.

Iberdrola Mexico currently has an installed capacity of 2,600 MW, about half of which is clean energy from 6 wind farms and 3 photovoltaic farms. In addition, the company opened a new stage of growth in the country in 2024 with a portfolio of renewable projects that today totals 10 GW of capacity. “We want to be the industry’s travel companion in its decarbonization and emissions reduction goals,” summarized Katya Somohano, general director of Iberdrola Mexico.
