Twenty-one people have died from contracting rickettsia in Baja California this year, according to José Adrián Medina Amarillas, head of the state’s Health Department.

The state official mentioned that the municipalities where there were deaths from rickettsia are Tijuana, San Quintín and mainly in Mexicali.

“Treating rickettsia is not just fumigation, we have wanted to raise awareness among the population that it is not all about being marked for fumigation. Sometimes we jokingly say that we are not a fumigation company,” said the health secretary.

Medina Amarillas explained that fumigation is only one part of the process of the entire protocol that health authorities must follow to stop the spread of rickettsia.

“When we go to the neighborhoods, we inform people, we check to make sure they don’t have furniture or utensils in the yard, which is where the ticks develop. We also fumigate, but we also inform the doctors who work in those neighborhoods so that they are aware and think of rickettsia when a person arrives with fever,” he explained.
