AMLO explica cómo beneficiarán a México aranceles de EU al acero y aluminio

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted this morning as positive the stricter tariff rules announced yesterday by the United States regarding the import of steel and aluminum, a control that will benefit Mexico and is implemented as a measure to the detriment mainly of China.

López Obrador reiterated that for his Government it has been very important to maintain the partnership with the United States and Canada, and now, with these measures, “Mexico has the possibility of importing steel and other goods to these countries” and benefits because plants are established, investment arrives, jobs are generated.

They do not want the borders of their country to be completely opened and that they can only import steel and aluminum from Mexico, which is produced in Mexico.

Regarding the role that Mexico played in reaching this resolution, AMLO stressed that “we set two conditions.” The first, that there be no talk of countries, “that the resolution will not be dedicated (to China)”; the second, is a “special treatment” in the case of imports of these raw materials from Brazil to Mexico.

“In the case of Mexico, steel and aluminum are needed from Brazil, and we have a very good relationship with Brazil, and it was agreed that Brazil will have special treatment,” explained the president.

Finally, he recalled that this type of agreement is something that benefits the three nations that make up the T-MEC, and it is thanks to these policies that investments are coming to Mexico, increasing automobile production in national territory, “and that is work,” he said.
