Municipal authorities in Nuevo Ideal, Durango, announced the existence of a 37-kilometer-long crack that is up to eight meters deep in some sections, so they notified the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred).

After residents of the district alerted about what happened through social networks, Mayor Luis Gracia sent Civil Protection elements to carry out a review.

At some points, the width of the opening is one and a half meters; the fissure crosses agricultural fields, warehouses, ranches and roads, explained Gracia, who expressed his fear that a huge sinkhole will occur.

Arturo Galindo Cabada, director of state Civil Protection, reported that an overflight has already been carried out and the Mennonite community through which part of the crack passes has been alerted.

Ground and aerial surveys are being carried out to establish what caused it and measure the risk it implies, he said.

He explained that although it is a worrying situation, it is a crack that has been there for more than a year, but it has spread in recent days and this has caused concern among the residents. Four houses were possibly fractured by the gigantic opening, he reported.

Meanwhile, after heavy rain on Wednesday night in Zapopan, Jalisco, a teenager who tried to cross the El Seco stream on board an Audi SUV was swept away by the current, between the streets of Río Azares and Camino Nacional.

The vehicle was found meters ahead, with the driver’s door open and without the girl, so municipal and state civil protection elements, together with members of the Army, carried out search efforts yesterday; as of press time, she had not been found.

Authorities also reported the fall of at least 40 trees in Zapopan, one of which crushed three cars; in addition, they reported that five houses suffered severe damage, including the collapse of the vault in one of them.

Meanwhile, in several municipalities in Nayarit, such as Compostela, San Blas and Bahía de Banderas, the rainfall caused damage to roads, the state Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection announced.

The agency detailed that on federal highway 200, sections Tepic-Puerto Vallarta and Tepic-Guadalajara, the fall of trees caused obstruction of the asphalt, so teams of state government personnel worked in the area to clear it.

In Tamaulipas, a landslide occurred on national highway 85, at kilometer 167, in the municipality of Llera de Canales.
