At least one of the criminal complaints filed by Bayardo Ojeda Marrufo against Joaquín Díaz Mena, the elected governor from the Morena-PT-PVEM coalition, is still active. However, it is not in Yucatán but rather in Mexico City.
As part of the division and conflict between Morena sympathizers and members, Bayardo Ojeda, who was a candidate for local legislator within the same coalition, filed a complaint on May 23 against Díaz Mena with the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the Tax Administration Service (SAT). The complaint alleges possible federal tax fraud and other federal offenses, including illicit enrichment.
When filing the complaint with the FGR, Bayardo Ojeda explained that Joaquín Díaz Mena reported monthly earnings of $487,000 but only paid taxes on $87,000. In other words, the then Morena gubernatorial candidate evaded taxes on the remaining $400,000, which amounts to nearly $5 million annually in tax evasion.
Bayardo Ojeda also filed other complaints at the state level with the State Attorney General’s Office, which is now an autonomous entity.
Complaints Regarding Death Threats On April 12, Bayardo Ojeda filed a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office regarding death threats that he attributed to the teams of the Morena candidates for governor and municipal president of Mérida, Joaquín Díaz Mena and Rommel Pacheco Marrufo.
On April 30, he filed another complaint, this time specifically against Díaz Mena for illicit enrichment. He explained that over 12 years, Díaz Mena acquired ranches and other properties, amassing a fortune of at least $44 million.
To determine the legal status of these three formal complaints against the now-elected Morena governor, inquiries were made to both the state and federal prosecutors’ offices, and various investigative sources were consulted.
It was revealed that Bayardo Ojeda’s complaint with the FGR is not being handled by the investigative agency in Yucatán; instead, the case was transferred to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Investigation of Tax Crimes and the Financial System in Mexico City.
The progress of the investigations and the status of the case file remain unknown, but at least the complaint is still active or perhaps archived.
During the campaign, the now-elected Morena, PT, and PVEM legislator expressed support for Renán Barrera Concha from the PAN, PRI, and Panal coalition. However, after the election, in which Díaz Mena emerged as the winner and Bayardo Ojeda himself was elected as a local legislator for Morena in District 8, he regretted his decision and publicly endorsed the project of the person he had reported, asking for forgiveness for his mistakes.
