Summer vacations: Cofepris reports 18 beaches with high levels of fecal bacteria

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks said that sampling was carried out on 289 beaches distributed in 76 tourist destinations.

With the start of the 2024 summer vacation season approaching, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced on Wednesday that 18 of 289 beaches analyzed exceeded the maximum limit of the Enterococcus Faecalis bacteria, which is why they represent a risk to the health of tourists and their inhabitants.

After analyzing 2,315 samples of seawater obtained at 393 points, in coordination with the state Areas for Protection against Sanitary Risks (APCRS), it was observed that 93.8% of the beaches, that is, 271 beaches, do comply with the safety level of 200 NMP of enterococci/100ml, which is why they are considered “suitable for recreational use.”

In a statement, Cofepris detailed that the 18 beaches where the conditions harmful to the health of tourists and residents were detected are:

Cofepris said in a statement that it has coordinated with the state Health Risk Protection Areas so that the five entities mentioned implement sanitation measures on said beaches and thus prevent risks to the health of vacationers this season.

It should be remembered that since 2023, health authorities have been constantly monitoring the water quality of beaches in the country to ensure the protection of visitors to these destinations.
