The Republican presidential candidate for the United States, Donald Trump, said this Saturday that in his first term, between 2017 and 2021, the Government of Mexico gave him “everything he wanted” within the negotiations that both countries held on issues such as trade and migration.
Trump made these statements during a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, just a week after the attack he suffered in Butler, Pennsylvania, and after his candidacy for the November 5 elections was formalized on Thursday.
In front of supporters gathered at the Van Alden Arena, Trump said that when he wanted to build a wall on the border with Mexico to contain migration, he demanded that the Government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador deploy 28,000 soldiers and that when Mexico refused, he threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican products.
According to Trump, negotiations began in which Mexico, represented by the other foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, finally agreed to deploy military personnel to stop migratory flows.
“They gave us everything I wanted. I received everything from Mexico,” he said.
