Two young Russians, named Ilia Kiselev and Kate Kiseleva, shared their surprise at visiting the Guelaguetza celebration, also known as “Monday of the Hill,” in the state of Oaxaca, for the first time.

During their stay at the festival, the Russians commented that it was one of the main events in which 8 delegations from Oaxaca would parade, because they were very excited to experience it.

“We really want to see it because I am sure it is something super brilliant, with a lot of atmosphere, with a lot of music, a lot of dancing and of course the traditional Oaxacan clothing that we love,” Kate commented.

While they were preparing two hours before the event began, the young Russians pointed out that it is necessary to go early to position themselves in the front rows and have the opportunity to observe the dancers up close, and despite the rain, they said they were happy to be in Oaxaca.

“Our legs are already very wet, our shoes, everyone is wet, but oh well,” Ilia commented. Kate also said that luckily everyone was just as wet as them, with umbrellas and excited to watch the parade.

Shortly before the parade began it began to rain again, however, this did not stop the Russians from waiting for the dancers to arrive, who in the company of fireworks opened the celebration.

Behind the first dancers who were accompanied by bulls with fireworks, a band of musicians livened up the atmosphere while the Russians remained standing in the rain.

“This is incredible, friends, what a great atmosphere,” Ilia commented.

Among the dancers were some in the company of large people made of cardboard, who moved to the rhythm of those who led them through the streets of Oaxaca. The women in their traditional costumes did not take long to arrive and were the main ones in charge of providing beautiful colors to that rainy afternoon.

In addition, some girls who were among the dancers approached the people who were attentively watching the parade to give them sweets, chocolates and other snacks, which both Russians said they liked.

Regarding a dance in which the women carried a basket on their heads, Ilia commented “They look very pretty and look at all this, the girls carry on their heads and they are dancing all the way.”

After several hours of watching the most representative dances of the state of Oaxaca, both Russians agreed that they loved the presentation of the Guelaguetza.

“This is really brilliant, people come with a lot of joy: they are dancing, they are playing musical instruments and I really like this atmosphere. Everyone shouts ‘Long live Guelaguetza’, ‘Long live Oaxaca’. It is impressive,” commented Ilia.

Kate commented that people “with experience” come with small mezcals to share for free with the people who attend the Guelaguetza celebrations.

“The parade is incredible, and for me it ended super fast, I wanted to see more. They have incredible costumes, these women’s costumes, their flowers, everything is incredible,” she commented.

Meanwhile, in the comments, users did not hesitate to share their opinions about the Russians’ video, among which the excitement of the Mexicans to see them enjoy the traditions of Oaxaca stands out.

“How nice it is to see them enjoy our Mexico”; “These Russians do a good job spreading the culture of Mexico”; “What a beautiful parade and how good that they went to enjoy it”; “A pleasure to see them living the Mexican traditions”; “Enjoy a lot, Russian friends,” among others.
