“Do you speak English?” asked a Dutch tourist to each person who stopped to observe a traffic accident that the woman caused in the morning in downtown Mérida.
The foreign tourist couple arrived in Mérida, rented a car, and began heading to the beach.
The woman was driving the car on 34th Street in downtown Mérida, but according to what she told the police, when she reached the intersection with 65th Street, she did not notice the stop sign because “she was looking elsewhere.”
Then, by invading 65th Street, which had the right of way, the car she was driving was hit by a “Va y Ven” bus from the Vergel III route, whose driver could do nothing to avoid the collision.
The crash forced the public transport driver to brake suddenly, causing two women to fall from their seats and suffer injuries to various parts of their bodies.
The damages were not significant, but the bus practically blocked 65th Street, causing serious traffic problems as it is one of the main routes to the city center.
Language Barrier Almost Prevents Help
The foreigners were looking for a way to communicate with the company that rented them the vehicle and with the insurance company, so they approached people taking photos of the accident to ask if anyone spoke English and could help them.
The driver and her companion were finally assisted by a young woman who was on the bus.
Later, State Police officers arrived and, with the help of a phone translation app, managed to have a conversation with the foreigners.
An ambulance from the state police also arrived at the scene, and paramedics attended to the injured, but none required hospital transport.
Representatives from the company that rented the vehicle to the tourists arrived at the accident site to carry out the necessary procedures.
