Borderlands Mexico: Surging cross-border flows a boon for operators like DHL

The border between the US and Mexico has become a hub for cross-border trade, with companies like DHL Global Forwarding benefiting from the surge in flows. According to Robert Reiter, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding in the US, Mexico’s rise on the global stage is due to factors such as the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China, logistics chains that had to pivot due to the Covid pandemic in 2020, and its geographic location.

Reiter notes that companies are increasingly looking for guidance on issues like local regulations, customs requirements, workforce, sourcing of raw materials, and logistics capabilities when considering moving their operations to Mexico. He highlights the various sectors that have found a home in Mexico, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, retail, and e-commerce.

DHL Global Forwarding has established itself as a major player in the US-Mexico trade corridor, with 39 operating stations across the country. Reiter emphasizes the importance of regionalization, nearshoring, and reshoring, which involve bringing manufacturing and sourcing closer to where consumption is. He believes that Mexico is at the forefront of this trend.
