Every year, a particular date is dedicated to honoring these emblematic infrastructures, which are located at strategic points. Usually, the points where they are installed show spectacular landscapes. These iconic points provide support in the navigation of sailors.

This is a fundamental infrastructure in the environment of sailors, but particularly in safety, because through them, they were able to locate the safe place, especially if they are in adverse weather conditions. This date is used to remember the importance they have.

Lighthouses symbolize safety between ships, boats, sailors and crews. Thanks to them, safe entrances to ports are located, especially at night, or during severe weather conditions, when visibility is considerably reduced, and this is a fundamental tool.

It is said that this celebration began in the United States, being, at the time, a reason for a national holiday. This was a reminder of the signing of the Law for the Establishment and Support of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys and Public Docks approved by the United States Congress in 1789. Later, several countries joined the celebration on that date.

Mazatlán Lighthouse

In 1821, the city of Mazatlán received the certificate as the first deep-sea port in the Mexican Pacific. At that time, it was common for more than 60 ships to arrive at the port each year, from Europe and the Far East, with various types of merchandise.

It is said that, for a period of 7 years, there was no signage that allowed sailors to locate themselves and approach, which put the crew and the vessel itself at risk. According to historical accounts, it is said that its construction began in 1892.

However, it was not until 1930, when the final adaptations were made, building it from a point known as “Punta Pala”, located on the Vigía hill. It is known that, at the beginning of the 1920s, its lighting system was changed to lamps with electric filaments.

Matamoros Lighthouse

Due to its panoramic views, as well as being special for those who enjoy photography, in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, there is a place where, according to the locals, you can capture some of the best angles of its historic center, as well as the majestic Banderas Bay.

This is the lighthouse located on Matamoros Street. It is very easy to get to it: you have to take a walk along Mina Street, heading towards the mountains. Crossing the street and a few steps to the left, you will find this historic point, which was built in 1932.

It is said that for more than 40 years it was a powerful guide to guide boats to a safe harbor. The lighthouse stopped working in 1978. It was not until 2006 that it was reopened to the public, rescuing it so that tourists and locals had a place from which to appreciate the city.

Punta Molas Lighthouse

Punta Molas marks the northernmost point of the coast of the island of Cozumel in Quintana Roo. In this same sense, it is the easternmost point of the Mexican Republic. An old lighthouse is preserved here, and not to mention its beautiful beaches that adorn the island.

One of the main functions of lighthouses is to provide a watch for sailors to safely reach national coasts. Every August 7, we celebrate its anniversary.
The site is reached by a very narrow, unpaved road, which is surrounded by tropical flora. This path, according to locals, is passable throughout the year. It is said to be named Punta Molas, in memory of a cartographer and soldier of Spanish origin.

Puerto Morelos Lighthouse

This is an iconic symbol of this beautiful place full of history. Puerto Morelos is the eleventh municipality of Quintana Roo, which is located less than 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen and/or Cancun. It is an important center, which is in full tourist development.

It has a wide variety of attractions, including the incredible Cenote Route, with almost 20 of these impressive sites, between open, semi-open and closed. Its symbol is a leaning lighthouse, which is visited year after year by thousands of tourists.

The lighthouse became a reminder of the community’s strength due to its important historical value. From there, you can enjoy impressive views of both the beach and the sea. It was built in 1905, witnessing the evolution of the community: from a fishing village to a thriving tourist community.

Punta Cancun Lighthouse

According to tourist guides and travel agencies, Cancun is one of the most fascinating places in the entire state of Quintana Roo, with a considerable number of tourist attractions. Among them, there is one of the most striking and emblematic, the Punta Cancun Lighthouse.

From here, you have an excellent view to enjoy the Mexican Caribbean. It has the reputation of being the perfect place to take photographs, so you can have incredible memories of your visit. The place is flanked by incredible and beautiful beaches, characterized by turquoise blue waters.

Here, the waves are usually calm, and its whitish sand is extremely fine. From the lighthouse, you can see several beaches, listed as the best in the city of Cancun. This can be an ideal place to capture that shot of an incredible sunset.
