The Alianza Maya for Bees organization has reported a massive die-off of bees in the municipality of Tizimín, Yucatán. According to their statement, hundreds of beehives have been affected, resulting in significant economic losses.
Details of the Incident
- In March of this year, 769 beehives owned by 22 beekeepers in the Tizimín region were impacted.
- The economic losses exceed 4 million pesos, and approximately 3,630 days of rural work have been wasted.
Cause of Bee Deaths
The organization attributes the bee deaths to exposure to the insecticide Fipronil. Interestingly, Fipronil is banned in the entire European Union and 11 other countries due to its harmful effects. The company Enerall is also implicated in this matter.
Urgent Action Needed
The Alianza Maya emphasizes that Fipronil is the primary cause of fatal damage to bee colonies in Mexico. To prevent further harm to the environment, they have urged the Mexican health authority (Cofepris) to cancel its registration in our country.
Authorities’ Response
Since 2018, there have been multiple reports of mass bee deaths in Tizimín. Despite filing complaints with the Profepa (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), authorities have yet to take effective action.
