A group of dogs is causing the death of sea turtles in the coastal area of Todos Santos and Pescadero in Baja California Sur. At the beginning of this week, biologist Graciela Tiburcio made an urgent call to the authorities of the three levels of government and to the community to address the problem.

Through a citizen complaint to the media, Tiburcio explained that the lack of responsible ownership of pets such as dogs is exemplified by the damage they can cause to other wild species.

So far in the high season for sea turtles, she said that dogs without a leash or care on the beaches have killed two turtles and in 2023, they caused the death of 17 specimens.

Since the damage to these protected species constitutes environmental crimes with fines of up to 7 million pesos, work is being done on investigating the owners of the animals to determine responsibilities.

In both Todos Santos and Pescadero, residents have joined in the complaints as these dogs have attacked other dogs and even people.
