Through its subsidiary Gasolinas Bienestar, Pemex increased shipments of oil and gasoline to Cuba this year, even with the risk that the United States will retaliate against the company for violating its laws on the embargo on the island.

“In the three months ended March 31, 2024, Gasolinas Bienestar, S.A. de C.V. exported 21.8 thousand barrels of crude oil per day and 3.6 thousand barrels of petroleum products for a total amount of 3.3 billion pesos (200 million dollars),” reveals the report that Pemex submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States.

Oil shipments to the Caribbean country grew 30% compared to last year, while exports of gasoline and other crude oil derivatives increased 9%.

“Sales of Gasolinas Bienestar, S.A. de C.V. They are carried out under contracts denominated in pesos at the rates in force in the market. We have established procedures to guarantee that such sales are carried out in accordance with the applicable law,” says the document that this newspaper released last Saturday.

The company headed by Octavio Romero Oropeza reports that most of the gasoline sold in Mexico is imported from the United States, but it still sent more shipments of fuel to the country governed by Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The University of Texas estimates that Mexico’s exports to the largest of the Antilles represent a quarter of the island’s needs and the rest is supplied by Venezuela, where the cheapest gasoline in the region is sold.

Cuba and Mexico among the countries with the most expensive fuel
However, this is not the case for Mexico and Cuba, which are on the list of countries that offer the most expensive fuel to the public in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to official data collected by Global Petrol Prices, used as a source of information by the federal government and the Bank of Mexico. In fact, the average price in Mexico is at 1,309 dollars per liter as of August 5, while Cuba sells the hydrocarbon at 1,295 dollars, according to the monitoring of the consulting firm that includes regular and premium gasoline sold to the final consumer.

On its front page this Monday, El Gran Diario de México published that, according to official records as of July from the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), loading gasoline and diesel in the national territory has never been as expensive as it is today.

To fill a 40-liter tank of regular fuel, you have to spend an average of 956 pesos, 72 more than a year ago and 180 pesos more than at the beginning of this administration.

Gasoline prices in Mexico established new historical highs due to the increase in oil prices, the depreciation of the peso against the dollar, the cost of logistics and taxes.

The prices also respond to the sales margin, quality adjustment, security costs and market competition, said Alejandro Montufar, director of PetroIntelligence.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recognizes the transfers of crude oil to the island. “We will do everything we can to help the people of Cuba, so that they no longer have any doubts, because, including oil, it is a people that is suffering an inhumane, unjust blockade, and we cannot turn our backs on the people of Cuba. And we do not have to ask permission from any foreign government, because we are a free, independent and sovereign country,” he said in October of last year.
